Driving from Phuket to Krabi is one of the most useful rental car journeys in southern Thailand. It avoids fixed minivan schedules, provides enough space for luggage and allows travellers to stop in Phang Nga instead of treating the journey as a simple transfer. The road is paved throughout, so a standard car is sufficient.
Depending on the pickup point and final hotel, the journey covers approximately 150 to 180 kilometres. From Phuket Town to Ao Nang, allow around three to three and a half hours without major stops. Starting in Patong, Kata or Rawai can add significant time because the route must first cross Phuket.
Phuket to Krabi Distance and Driving Route
Leave Phuket on Route 402 and cross the Sarasin Bridge to the mainland. Continue towards Khok Kloi and join Route 4, also known as Phetkasem Road. This main highway crosses Phang Nga Province before entering Krabi through the Ao Luek area.
Navigation applications may suggest Route 4311, Route 415 or smaller local roads depending on traffic and the exact destination. These can form part of a valid route, but drivers unfamiliar with the area may prefer to remain on the clearly marked main highways.
The road is not technically difficult, although it includes bends, changing speed limits and busy junctions near towns. Thailand drives on the left. Watch carefully for motorcycles, vehicles joining from roadside businesses and sudden braking near markets or U-turn points.
A compact car is sufficient for two travellers with light luggage. Families may prefer a saloon, crossover or seven-seat vehicle, but luggage capacity should be checked separately from the number of passenger seats.
Where to Stop between Phuket and Krabi
Wat Suwannakhuha is one of the easiest cultural stops to add. Commonly known as the Cave Temple, it is located about nine kilometres from Phang Nga town, close to Highway 4. The main limestone cave contains a reclining Buddha and several other religious images.
Monkeys gather near the entrance. Keep food and loose bags inside the car, close the windows and avoid feeding the animals. Parking is available, but visitors should use marked spaces and dress appropriately for an active Buddhist site.
Samet Nangshe Viewpoint offers a wide panorama across the limestone islands of Phang Nga Bay. It is not directly on the fastest route to Krabi, so allow extra time for the detour. Access arrangements vary between individual viewpoint areas, and the final climb may use a local shuttle rather than private cars. Follow the instructions at the lower parking area.
Do not attempt both stops when driving to a flight, ferry or fixed hotel transfer. For a relaxed journey, select one major stop and use Phang Nga town for fuel or lunch. This keeps the total travel time predictable and reduces the chance of reaching Krabi after dark.
Krabi Town, Ao Nang and Railay Are Different Destinations
Enter the exact hotel address before leaving Phuket. Krabi Town is the provincial centre, with a riverfront, local markets and boat access to Khao Khanap Nam. Ao Nang is a separate coastal resort area with hotels, restaurants and departure points for island trips.
Ao Nang lies beyond Krabi Town, so it adds distance and driving time. Traffic near the beachfront may become slow during the evening. If the accommodation is in central Ao Nang, confirm whether it provides private parking or directions to a nearby public area.
Railay Beach cannot be reached by car. Limestone cliffs separate it from the mainland road system, and visitors continue by boat from Ao Nang or another operating pier. A Railay hotel should never be used as the final road destination in a navigation application.
A return trip from Phuket to Krabi in one day is possible but rarely efficient. Six or more hours of driving leave little time for Phang Nga, Ao Nang or Krabi itself. An overnight stay creates a safer and more enjoyable itinerary.
Rental Permission, Mileage and Returning the Car
Confirm the Krabi journey before collecting the vehicle. The current RentGo Phuket conditions state that long interprovincial trips without notice may result in additional fees. Check the mileage allowance, roadside assistance area and fuel policy for the exact offer.
Travellers can review suitable vehicles through RentGo Phuket. Choose enough luggage space and obtain written confirmation that travel through Phang Nga to Krabi is permitted.
Driving to Krabi does not automatically allow the vehicle to be returned there. The rental terms require the car to be delivered at the agreed time and place, and the locations currently listed are primarily in Phuket. A Krabi or Krabi Airport return must therefore be requested and confirmed in writing before booking. Availability and relocation charges may vary.
Standard insurance may exclude damage to tyres, rims, glass and the underside of the car. It also excludes off-road or flooded-road use. The normal Route 402 and Route 4 journey does not require leaving paved roads, so ignore shortcuts that enter unsuitable tracks.
Fill the tank before departure or stop at a major service station along the route. RentGo Phuket normally uses a same-to-same fuel policy, meaning the vehicle should be returned with the recorded pickup level. Save the assistance telephone number offline and keep the rental documents in the car.
During periods of heavy rain, check road conditions before leaving. Thailand’s Department of Highways provides information through hotline 1586. Never enter standing water when its depth or road surface cannot be assessed.
The Phuket to Krabi drive remains one of the strongest self-drive routes on Thailand’s Andaman coast in 2026. Route 402, the Sarasin Bridge and Route 4 provide a straightforward connection, while Phang Nga adds cave temples and limestone landscapes along the way. With rental permission confirmed, one carefully chosen stop and an overnight stay in Krabi, the journey becomes a valuable part of the holiday rather than a long transfer day.
